Landscape Chinese Scroll Painting – Silk Wall Art – Red Foliage Snow

For this Chinese landscape scroll painting, the painter chose snow, mountain, waterfall, and red foliage as the subject and worked it in layered ink washes. This is the kind of shanshui silk wall art that changes a room without shouting about it. Negative space is treated as a subject in its own right.

Chinese viewers would read the scene at a glance: a waterfall dropping in a pale thread, and layered mountains receding into the haze. The color work is all red tones, laid on over layered ink washes with a steady hand. A scroll's edges are protected by its mounting, so the art itself stays untouched. The snow, mountain, waterfall, and red foliage are rendered with layered ink washes, while red tones tie the whole scene together.

Try it opposite a window so daylight rakes softly across the silk. It makes a memorable housewarming gift with real staying power.
